Google Upgrades iPhone-to-Android Data Migration in Android 17
Switching from an iPhone to an Android device is becoming significantly easier. Google has introduced an upgraded migration system built directly into Android 17, enabling iPhone users to wirelessly transfer more of their personal data to a new Android phone without needing to download a separate third-party migration app.
Google announced the upgrade alongside Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z series devices.
A Simplified QR Code Transfer Process
The upgraded migration workflow uses a simple QR code setup to securely pair an iPhone with a new Android device. During initial setup:
Users select the iPhone or iPad transfer option on their new Android phone.
They scan the displayed QR code using their iPhone camera.
Users select exactly which apps, photos, videos, contacts, messages, calendar entries, and settings they wish to copy over.
In addition to standard media and contacts, the new system supports transferring Google Accounts, saved passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and eSIM configurations.
To use the new wireless system, the receiving device must run Android 17 or later, while the sending iPhone must have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and be updated to the latest available iOS version.

Automatic Account Syncing and eSIM Transfer
For users with a Google Account on their iPhone, transferring app data will automatically move and sign in that account on the new Android device. Users can also continue setting up their new phone in the background while the data copy process completes, provided the iPhone remains on the transfer screen.
Additionally, the system handles eSIM migration after the primary data transfer finishes:
Users keep their iPhone connected and powered on.
They select an eligible eSIM and follow on-screen prompts to transfer their mobile line.
Note: eSIM transfer availability depends on specific carrier support. Users with unsupported carriers will still need to contact their network provider directly.
Device Compatibility and Rollout
The new migration experience applies to Google's Pixel 10 and later models, as well as Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 series running One UI 9. If the QR code does not appear or fails to scan, devices can automatically fall back to the older transfer method.
Google has begun rolling out the upgrade to selected Pixel devices and plans to expand the feature across more Android 17 smartphones over time.
