Google Images Quietly Transforms Into a Pinterest Rival

Google Images has quietly undergone a massive redesign, and the new visual gallery mirrors Pinterest almost beat for beat. Complete with saveable collections and a personalized feed, Google is shifting from a simple search utility to a full-fledged visual discovery engine—and nobody at the company seems embarrassed about it.

According to Google, the updated platform is “a dynamic, immersive gallery of images from across the web—updated in real time and intelligently tailored to your unique interests”.

The Familiar "Collections" Feature

The addition of the Collections feature completes the Pinterest impression. Users can now save images into dedicated folders, which then conveniently surface as tabs above the main gallery.

“As you browse and save ideas to your collections, they’ll appear as tabs above the main gallery, making it easy to jump back in and continue exploring based on what inspires you.” — Google

To Pinterest users, this description is eerily familiar. However, this is not Google’s first attempt to capture Pinterest’s audience:

  • 2019: Google launched Shopping Ads, heavily copying a format Pinterest already utilized.

  • 2020: Google built Keen, an entire standalone app that mirrored Pinterest’s core functions but quietly faded away.

Despite four distinct attempts across seven years, Pinterest has continued to climb, currently sitting at 631 million monthly active users. Historically, visual discovery has rewarded focus rather than imitation.

Nano Banana AI: The Real Threat to Pinterest

While copying a grid layout changes very little, the genuinely groundbreaking update is the introduction of artificial intelligence. Google has added AI-powered image generation directly inside Search using its new Nano Banana model.

This feature allows users to generate a highly specific visual from a simple text prompt and then use that custom visual as a basis for further search discovery. Google states this “transforms a simple text prompt into a high-quality, custom visual made completely from scratch, seamlessly bridging the gap between imagination and reality.”

This combination of generation and search is the actual threat to Pinterest. By generating exactly what they imagined and searching directly from it, users can skip the traditional scrolling and discovery steps entirely.

Rollout Timeline and Availability

Image generation within AI Overviews is arriving broadly, reaching every region where AI Mode already supports image creation.

However, the new Pinterest-style Google Images gallery is rolling out much more gradually. The launch starts exclusively with US desktop users over the coming weeks. Consequently, Pakistani users will have to wait a little longer before getting their hands on the redesigned visual feed.
