X Rolls Out New Video Editor and Recording Tools

X Launches New Video Editor and Recording Tools to Fight Content Theft

The Elon Musk-owned social media platform X is rolling out a brand-new video editor and suite of recording tools. This major update aims to actively encourage creators to post original videos directly to the platform, rather than relying on recycled, stolen, or repurposed content.

The newly introduced features bring several creative capabilities to the app. Users can now utilize multilingual video captions with fully customizable styles. Additionally, the update adds advanced green-screen effects, allowing creators to overlay themselves onto photos from their personal camera roll or even other existing posts on X.

Currently, these creative tools are exclusively available to iOS users, while the Android version remains under active development.

Prioritizing Original Content Over Repurposed Viral Clips

Announcing the update, X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, emphasized that one of the platform’s highest priorities is giving creators better tools to produce original material—and appropriately rewarding them for doing so.

Bier noted that many of the platform’s top accounts continue to post heavily repurposed or stolen videos, often years after the original clips first went viral.

Why Video Matters More Than Ever on X

According to internal company data, posts containing videos now account for nearly half of all impressions on X. This milestone highlights the massive and growing importance of video content for user engagement.

The company hopes that providing a more capable, built-in editing suite will make it seamless for users to create high-quality content natively, reducing the reliance on videos that already exist on competing networks.

The Looming Battle with Mature Rivals

Despite these upgrades, industry observers point out that introducing a video editor alone may not be enough to cultivate a thriving creator ecosystem.

Rival platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Meta’s platforms offer much more mature monetization systems. Furthermore, these competing networks provide sophisticated rights-management tools that actively help creators protect their intellectual property from unauthorized reuploads.

The Ongoing War Against Bots and Scrapers

X also continues to battle pervasive bot and spam networks. These automated accounts artificially inflate engagement metrics and frequently scrape original creator content for immediate reposting.

The scale of the challenge is immense. Earlier this year, Bier revealed that X’s security systems were identifying and suspending roughly 208 bots every single minute.

X has previously stated that a significant portion of its core product team remains dedicated to combating spam and improving overall content authenticity. As AI-generated spam and plagiarized content continue to flood social networks, these new video tools represent X's latest attempt to transform itself into a premium destination for original creators.
