X’s New Algorithm Prioritizes Mutual Followers
X has rolled out a brand-new algorithm update to change how users experience conversations on the platform. By prioritizing posts and replies from mutual followers, X aims to make discussions feel significantly less hostile and much more personal.
The major change was announced by X’s head of product, Nikita Bier. He noted that the platform had identified a critical gap in its recommendation system, which was preventing posts from mutual connections from appearing prominently in reply threads.
Ending the "Battleground" Mentality
Without prioritizing mutuals, X's reply sections often felt disconnected and argumentative. Bier explained the reasoning behind the fix in a recent post on the platform.
“We noticed this data was missing from the algo and it made your friends appear less in your replies. This resulted in the reply section feeling more like a battleground with people you don’t recognise,” Bier stated.
The new X algorithm update directly addresses this by giving greater visibility to "mutuals"—users you follow who also follow you back.
While this tweak might seem small, it offers major benefits for the user experience:
Familiar Conversations: Discussions will feel more like chats within a trusted community rather than random interactions with strangers.
Interest-Based Clusters: The algorithm adjustment will help niche, interest-based communities develop and connect more naturally.
A Broader Push for Original Content
This latest tweak is just one piece of X’s broader effort to improve the platform for creators and encourage meaningful engagement.
Recent updates aimed at supporting creators include:
Revamped Creator Payments: X recently revised its monetization system to heavily reward original content over reposted or aggregated material.
Built-in Video Editor: Creators now have access to native tools to produce, edit, and publish original videos directly from the X interface.
X vs. Meta’s Threads: The Battle for Community
The X algorithm update arrives right as competition with Meta’s Threads reaches a boiling point. Threads has been rapidly introducing its own community-focused features to capture market share.
Just last month, Threads launched “Your Algo,” a powerful feature that allows users to privately customize exactly what appears in their feed. Meta positioned this update as a way to give users ultimate control over recommendations while fostering tighter-knit communities.
With Threads recently crossing a massive 500 million monthly active users, the pressure is on. X's latest move to refine its recommendation system and prioritize mutual followers is a clear step toward improving user engagement and holding its ground in the social media landscape.
