Trump Media Pitches $100K/Month "Truth API" for Faster Market Data
Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), the parent company of Truth Social, is exploring a high-stakes revenue stream that could fundamentally change how Wall Street interacts with presidential announcements. According to sources familiar with the discussions, TMTG has pitched investment firms and high-frequency trading shops on a monthly subscription fee as high as $100,000 for ultra-fast access to posts from President Donald Trump’s account.
The "Truth API" Strategy
Last week, TMTG officially unveiled the "Truth API," a licensed data feed designed to provide banks and trading firms with instantaneous access to posts from the 10 most influential accounts on the platform, including President Trump’s. While the company did not disclose official pricing during the announcement, reports suggest a discounted $60,000 per month plan is being offered to firms that commit to a three-year contract.
This move marks the company’s first significant foray into data licensing. By providing this information to high-frequency traders, TMTG is capitalizing on the reality that President Trump’s social media activity often moves financial markets in real-time. For sophisticated trading firms, a latency advantage of even a few milliseconds can translate into hundreds of thousands of dollars in gains.
Ethical and Political Backlash
The plan has drawn immediate fire from Democratic lawmakers and ethics watchdogs. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon criticized the move, stating it would "make Wall Street traders rich" while financially benefiting the Trump family trust.
Donald Sherman, president of the nonpartisan watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), described the arrangement as "wildly unethical." However, legal experts note that such an arrangement exists in a regulatory gray area:
Emoluments Clauses: Experts suggest that the Constitution’s emoluments clauses, which bar gifts from foreign governments or states, may not apply to this type of commercial subscription service.
Insider Trading: Federal regulations broadly prohibit trading on "material, non-public information." However, because these posts are intended for a wide group of paying subscribers, they may not technically qualify as "non-public," making it difficult to frame the practice as illegal under current securities law.
A New Era of Market-Moving Media
The Truth API will provide round-the-clock coverage of influential posts and include an archive of data dating back to 2022. While TMTG has faced intense competition from larger social media rivals and its stock has seen significant volatility, this licensing model offers a unique monetization strategy tied directly to the President’s influence.
As the company moves toward the August 1 launch, the debate over whether it is appropriate to "pay for speed" regarding executive announcements is likely to intensify. In an age where digital infrastructure and social media presence define global market reactions, the Truth API may force regulators to reconsider the rules governing how market-moving information is distributed.
