Blu-ray technology is exceptionally fragile because manufacturers store the data on a very thin layer. Since modern video games require constant and consistent data transmission to run properly, even minor damage to a critical sector can make an entire game unplayable. The CCI noted that BD-Rs show poor stability compared to older CD-Rs and DVD±Rs. Fortunately, modern discs do include built-in correction and re-read mechanisms to help mitigate minor damages.
Can Third-Party Discs Last 70 Years?
Some gamers use third-party Blu-ray discs for digital backups. Brands like Verbatim promise massive lifespans, with its parent company, CMC Magnetics, claiming their BD-R 6X SL discs offer a 70-year data storage period. The TÜV Rheinland Group has even certified this specific claim.
However, consumers should remain skeptical. Because Blu-ray technology is relatively new, there is a lack of reliable, real-world case studies to definitively prove this 70-year claim. Instead, most accelerated aging simulations point right back to the standard 10 to 20-year lifespan. Discs only exceed this limit under strict, optimal preservation conditions.
How to Protect Your Physical PlayStation Games
You can extend the life of your PS4 and PS5 discs. The CCI has provided expert guidelines for optimal preservation. Follow these exact steps to protect your physical games:
Handling: Hold discs only by the center hole and the outer edge using your forefinger and thumb.
Storage: Store your discs vertically inside standard-sized jewel cases. Avoid plastic sleeves entirely.
Labeling: Never use adhesive labels. If necessary, label the clear inner hub using a water-based permanent marker.
Environment: Keep the discs in a cool, dry environment and limit their exposure to direct light and pollutants.
Temperature & Humidity: Maintain room temperatures strictly between 14°F and 73.4°F (-10°C and 23°C), and keep the relative humidity between 20% and 50%.
