The Secret to a Longer-Lasting Android Battery
If you are an Android user looking to optimize your smartphone's overall performance and battery life, knowing which settings to tweak is essential. Android devices, like all modern smartphones, operate incredibly well—but once they hit a certain low point with their battery life, they can start to lag and become highly inconvenient.
There are many factors that contribute to a quickly draining battery, such as limited storage space, your daily charging habits, and the type of charger you use. However, tech experts suggest that one of the most effective ways to make your battery last longer is by adjusting a specific internal setting to prevent your phone from doing too much background work when you aren't even using it.
The Problem: Background App Refresh
Several settings included on modern Androids are designed to help ensure your battery performs well, but many tech professionals point to background app activity as the primary culprit for battery drain.
When apps constantly refresh in the background to fetch new data—even while your screen is completely turned off—they quietly consume immense amounts of processing power and battery life.
Tech and IT manager Noam Birnbaum explains the severity of this issue:
"The thing I do when I troubleshoot a slow Android is to check how many apps are refreshing in the background. A lot of people may not even realize that they have dozens of apps doing this, refreshing to receive new data while the screen is off. All those apps that are refreshing are using processing power and battery."
How to Change the Setting
Want to ensure you are getting the absolute best out of your device's hardware? Checking your battery usage and restricting unnecessary background apps is a simple but highly effective fix.
Birnbaum outlines the exact steps to stop this silent battery drain:
Open your device's Settings app.
Scroll down and tap on Battery.
Select Battery Usage (or App Battery Usage, depending on your Android version).
This dashboard allows you to see exactly which apps are actively consuming your battery.
"You will be amazed," Birnbaum notes. "I recently had numerous applications on one of my customers' phones, refreshing every 15 minutes 24/7, and that is why his phone was so slow. After shutting down all the applications except for messaging and email, I could see a difference in less than one hour."
By restricting background activity for non-essential applications like shopping platforms, social media feeds, and unused mobile games, you can immediately reduce the strain on your processor and extend your daily battery life.
