Samsung Debuts Wide-Screen Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flagship Fold 8 Ultra
Samsung has officially launched its 2026 flagship foldable roster, introducing a dual-tier Fold strategy for the very first time. At one end lies the wide-screen Galaxy Z Fold 8, while on the other side sits the flagship Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, serving as the direct sequel to last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 completes the new smartphone portfolio. Joining these folding devices are two wearable refreshes: the Galaxy Watch 9 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.
The Flagship Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra represents the absolute pinnacle of Samsung's hardware engineering. Measuring just 4.1mm unfolded and 8.9mm folded while weighing 215g, the Ultra packs a large 8-inch 120Hz inner display (2504 x 2256p) alongside a 6.5-inch cover screen.
It brings a flagship-grade 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultrawide, a 10MP 3X telephoto lens, and a massive 5,000mAh battery—the largest battery ever fitted into a Samsung Fold.
Looking back at designing my very first blog in 2010 on a bulky Nokia N72 over a slow EDGE network, seeing a device like the Fold 8 Ultra pack a 5,000mAh battery and a 200MP camera into a 4.1mm frame truly highlights the sheer pace of mobile hardware evolution.
According to a Samsung spokesperson, the Ultra experience is meticulously designed so that a customer does not have to compromise when moving to a foldable, offering a camera system and battery life remarkably close to the traditional S26 Ultra.
The Wide-Screen Galaxy Z Fold 8
The most noticeable hardware change on the standard Fold 8 is its wider, “content-native” 4:3 aspect ratio for the inner screen, paired with a 16:10 cover display. Samsung implemented this design choice after tracking how young consumers spend their time—specifically noting that users average 40 to 50 minutes a day consuming short-form video content like Reels or Shorts.
Made using an ultra-durable Flex Titanium chassis and an Armour FlexHinge, the Fold 8 is billed as the world’s lightest folding device at just 201g. When unfolded, it measures an incredibly flat 4.5mm (9.7mm folded).

The Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Market Competition
Alongside the Fold duo, Samsung refreshed its popular clamshell model. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 is driven by an Exynos 2600 chip, features a larger 4.1-inch Super AMOLED cover display, a 6.9-inch main display, and a 4,300mAh battery wrapped in a sleek 180g frame. Samsung emphasized that the Flip remains core to its identity, catering directly to users looking for pocketability and unique camera angles.
While Samsung currently holds a commanding share of over 85% of foldables in key growth markets, the landscape in 2026 is rapidly shifting. Analysts note that Samsung’s historic dominance was largely achieved without aggressive global competition. With Apple's first foldable iPhone expected to launch this September, Samsung’s 2026 lineup serves as a pre-emptive strike against rising market pressures.
"Once you transition to a Fold, it is very difficult to ever go back to a traditional slab phone," a Samsung executive noted, emphasizing their focus on first-mover advantage and ecosystem integration.
