Meta Outage: Facebook and Instagram Hit by Massive Global Disruption
On Sunday, July 19, 2026, users worldwide woke up to a significant disruption across Meta's primary social media platforms. Both Facebook and Instagram, along with Facebook Messenger, experienced widespread outages, leaving thousands of users unable to access their accounts or refresh their feeds.
The Scale of the Outage
The service interruptions were not localized. Reports of intermittent access and complete service failures poured in from the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, the UAE, and South Africa.
According to the outage tracking platform Downdetector, the problems escalated quickly on Sunday morning:
Facebook: As of 07:46 GMT, over 4,808 reports were filed by users in the United States alone. The vast majority (63%) of these users reported experiencing issues specifically when trying to access the Facebook website.
Instagram: By 08:18 GMT, another 2,829 reports were logged by Instagram users in the U.S. who were struggling with the mobile app.
While Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger faced major technical hurdles, Meta's instant messaging service, WhatsApp, appeared to remain completely unaffected by the outage.
The User Experience: "Account Temporarily Unavailable"
The disruption centered heavily on desktop and web browser access. Users attempting to log into Facebook via a browser were met with a blank screen and a persistent error message stating: "Your account is currently unavailable due to a site issue. We expect this to be resolved shortly. Please try again in a few minutes".
On Instagram, while the web interface remained partially accessible for some, users reported that new content would not load, feeds were unavailable, and videos took significantly longer to buffer. Interestingly, some mobile app users reported being able to continue their sessions normally, while others encountered server connection faults and strict navigation errors.
Waiting on Meta's Response
As of the time of reporting, Meta has not issued a formal public statement regarding the root cause of the server failures and did not immediately reply to requests for comment from major news outlets. However, the automated error messages assure users that the technical team is aware of the site issue and expects normal service to resume shortly.
